Why is company knowledge the most important raw material for AI?

“ChatGPT knows the internet. But does it know your company?”

A question that seems obvious at first glance. And yet it is precisely this question that determines whether AI in the company becomes a real productivity gain or merely remains an impressive gimmick.

Because modern language models have enormous general knowledge. They know programming languages. Marketing strategies. Laws. Technologies. Industries.

However, they do not know your company. They know neither your products nor your internal processes. They do not know your customers. Not your project experience. Not your quality guidelines. Not your documentation. And certainly not the many small decisions that have made your company successful over the years.

Good AI needs more than general knowledge

Many companies expect AI to deliver perfect answers right away. What is often overlooked is this: a general AI works with general knowledge. That is often not enough for company-specific tasks.

Questions like

“Which approvals do we need for this quote?”

“Which version of our product supports this feature?”

“How was a similar customer problem solved last year?”

cannot be answered reliably by any public AI. Not because it would be incapable of doing so. But because it lacks the information.

The difference is comparable to a new employee. They bring expertise. But they do not yet know your company. They need to be trained. The same applies to AI.

The most valuable knowledge is often scattered everywhere

In most companies, the necessary knowledge already exists. However, it is located in a wide variety of places:

In SharePoint, on network drives, in emails, in CRM systems, in ERP, in wikis, in technical documentation, in project files, in presentations, in meeting minutes, in training materials, and very often only in the minds of employees.

For people, that means: searching. Asking around. Making phone calls. Writing emails. Comparing documents.

For AI, it means: without access to this knowledge, it can only provide general answers.

From information to company knowledge

A document alone does not make an intelligent knowledge base. Only when information is linked together does real added value emerge.

A modern AI system can, for example, establish connections between different sources of information. A technical document explains a product. A meeting records a decision. A support case describes a problem. An email contains a customer requirement. A presentation shows the solution strategy.

Only together do they create the complete picture. This is how AI not only answers questions. It understands the professional context. And delivers answers that fit the company.

Knowledge must grow – not be searched for

Company knowledge changes every day. New projects emerge. Products evolve. Employees gain experience. Meetings lead to decisions. Training sessions impart new know-how.

If this knowledge does not continuously flow into the knowledge base, every AI will lose quality over time.

An intelligent knowledge platform therefore grows continuously with the company. New insights are automatically incorporated. Existing knowledge remains up to date. Previous experience is available again at any time.

This is how AI develops together with the company.

The greatest competitive advantage is not in the AI

Many companies are currently investing in increasingly powerful AI models. What is often forgotten is this: most companies today use similar models.

The real competitive advantage therefore does not come from the AI itself. It comes from the knowledge it can use.

Two companies can use the same AI. However, the company with the better knowledge base gets the better answers. More accurate. Faster. More practical.

That is precisely why company knowledge will become one of the most important strategic assets in the coming years. Not only for people. But also for AI.

Vimmera thought starter

Ask yourself:

  • Can your employees find important information within a few seconds?
  • Is relevant knowledge still spread across different systems, or is it already centrally connected?
  • Is valuable experience lost after projects or meetings?
  • Can new employees quickly access existing company knowledge?
  • Would an AI today find all the information necessary for a well-founded answer?
  • Does your knowledge base grow with every project – or does knowledge disappear again after it is completed?

If you answer several of these questions with no, then the greatest potential of your AI strategy probably does not lie in a new AI model. But rather in making your existing knowledge available more intelligently.

Practical question of the week

How much time do your employees lose every day because important information is available somewhere – but neither people nor AI can find it at the right moment?

Takeaway

The performance of an AI is often measured by its language model. In practice, however, something else determines its value.

Not the AI alone. But the knowledge it can access.

Companies that systematically capture their knowledge, link it together, and make it permanently available create the foundation for AI that not only provides general answers, but truly supports everyday work.

Because the most important raw material for successful artificial intelligence is not computing power. It is your company’s knowledge.
